After months of planning, I'm finally getting plots in the ground within the next week. I'm conducting an experiment to determine the germination and establishment rates of three perennial bioenergy grasses in two habitat types with and without competitors. I've convinced collaborators to repeat the experiment in three other locations across North America, which will give the experiment greater power. I'm looking forward to actually getting it up and running, even though I know there will be the inevitable unforeseen pitfalls!
I've also been poking my nose into Miscanthus plants around town to see if they're starting to sprout. I'm sure I look a little strange inspecting these ornamental plants as I walk my dog around the neighborhood, but I don't mind. I'm planning a road trip to various invaded Miscanthus sinensis sites this spring, and I want to be sure that the plants are actually growing by the time I get out there! I want to get the trip wrapped up by early May, so I'm hoping to see lots of sprouts soon! Fingers crossed.
